Sample letter to engage with schools

This is a sample introductory letter to schools that you can use as a guideline.

Dear [A named contact is likely to be much more effective if you can find one]

STEM careers for girls and women at [your company name]

This letter is an invitation for your school to link with our organisation with a view to supporting your students generally, particularly with girls, to consider one of the many rewarding career opportunities available in the science, technology, engineering and construction sectors. We are a leading manufacturing company in the sector and it is our wish to recruit a highly skilled and diverse workforce to enable us to compete in the UK and global markets.

(Do say what you do, and outline the wider social and environmental outcomes of your company.)

Our aim is to raise your students’ and your teachers’ awareness of the opportunities offered by engineering technician apprenticeships as a route to a career as a professional engineer. We emphasise the importance of maths and science qualifications at GCSE level and encourage young people to study these subjects post 16. We can also offer support and guidance to those young people wishing to apply for apprenticeship places.

The UK will need 87,000 engineers qualified at level 4+ and 69,000 qualified at level 3 in each year between now and 2020 to meet demand in the industry. An engineering technician apprenticeship is an increasingly popular entry route into the profession, as young people can earn while they learn, acquiring highly sought-after work experience before going on to study for a degree at a later stage if they wish. Presently women make up just 8.5% of achievers on STEM apprenticeships and our company is taking direct action to address this gender imbalance.

We would like to arrange to meet with you, or the relevant member of your staff, to consider ways in which we can work together. We have some fantastic role models who would be pleased to come in and talk to your students about their own experiences and the opportunities on offer to them. They could also support specific curriculum areas or careers activities. We would be pleased to arrange for students to visit our premises to see what we do as well and to meet our technician ambassadors.

We look forward to hearing from you and to supporting your students into well paid and rewarding careers in the future.

Yours sincerely
